CORTIS, a representative fifth-generation K-pop boy group still in its first year since debut, will take the stage at Lollapalooza Chicago, using a slot at one of the largest outdoor music festivals in the United States to press further into the global market.

According to the music industry, CORTIS is the only K-pop boy group invited to this year’s festival, which will be held at Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois, from July 31 to Aug. 1 local time. That a rookie group with less than a year since debut has been given a solo set on a main stage underscores unusually high expectations from the local music industry.

Lollapalooza serves as a key launchpad for K-pop's global expansion

Launched in 1991 as an alternative music festival, Lollapalooza now draws roughly 170 top-tier acts from around the world each year and more than 400,000 attendees, making it one of North America’s most prestigious music festivals. On the lineup, CORTIS will share the bill with global pop stars such as Charli XCX, Olivia Dean and Lorde.

Lollapalooza has long served as a crucial stepping stone into the North American mainstream, with established K-pop acts such as BTS’s J-Hope and Tomorrow X Together (TXT) delivering successful performances there. Music critics say that if CORTIS pulls off this set, it could follow in the footsteps of those established groups and act as a catalyst for accelerating the global reach of fifth-generation K-pop.

Strong live credentials could help CORTIS win over festivalgoers with a live-band setup

CORTIS’s biggest advantage is their unusually strong live performance and stage presence for a rookie act. They demonstrated festival-ready performance skills through their first solo tour, which recently wrapped to strong turnout.

  • Opening shows sold out: The opening concerts of the "2026 CORTIS TOUR IN INCHEON" at Incheon Inspire Arena on the 18th and 19th sold out immediately after tickets went on sale.

  • Introduced live band sessions: By incorporating rich live band arrangements that go beyond the typical K-pop performance format, they drew strong praise from critics.

  • Audience-interactive staging: Rather than a one-way performance, they presented staging that actively engaged the audience, showing the kind of immediacy that suits large outdoor festivals.

The U.S. music market traditionally places a strong emphasis on band sound and live interaction. CORTIS’s band-backed live shows and audience participation elements from their solo tour are expected to be powerful assets for winning over Lollapalooza audiences.

Streaming and album numbers back the momentum

CORTIS’s case for a successful U.S. push is bolstered by explosive momentum on global charts. They continue to set new records in both streaming and physical sales. The title track "REDRED" from the group’s second EP, "Green Green," has held No. 1 on Apple Music Korea’s daily chart for 90 consecutive days, the second-longest run in history after BTS’s "Dynamite" (112) in 2020.

Notably, among albums released domestically this year, only two titles have sold more than 3 million copies each — BTS’s fifth studio album "Arirang" and CORTIS’s "Green Green" — a testament to the group’s overwhelming impact.

Having posted unprecedented results right after debut and firmly established itself as a fifth-generation K-pop leader, CORTIS now heads into its Lollapalooza debut with music fans and overseas media watching closely to see how it might reshape the global music landscape.
