As a supplementary budget drawn up to stabilise people’s livelihoods in the wake of the Middle East war and other factors has passed the National Assembly, the Ministry of Education’s supplementary budget is finally confirmed at KRW 4.8125 trillion.
Local education funding grants increased by KRW 4.7 trillion…a catalyst for recovery
The largest item in this supplementary budget is the local education funding grants, with a total increase of KRW 4.7694 trillion. The Ministry of Education said it will closely consult with provincial and municipal education offices, rapidly put the increased grants to support education sites—including protecting vulnerable groups—and carry out the role of a catalyst for livelihood recovery.
Those not currently in education can also take part…new “Youth Leap Talent Development Boot Camp”
A new initiative to help young people strengthen their employability skills, the “Youth Leap Talent Development Boot Camp” will receive KRW 28.3 billion. It expands the programme, previously offered mainly for currently enrolled students, to also include young people who are not currently in education, so a total of 4,000 young people will benefit. This project will be delivered as a short, intensive education programme jointly run by universities and companies across a wide range of fields, including advanced industries as well as the humanities and social sciences, arts and physical education, and services.
Easing the burden of school electricity bills and detailed support for vulnerable groups
To ease financial burdens on educational institutions, KRW 13 billion has also been increased for the “Expansion of solar power facilities at national universities and affiliated schools”. To reduce the pressure of tariff hikes caused by a recent surge in electricity use, solar power facilities will be installed promptly at 35 national universities and three national affiliated schools. In addition, an extra KRW 1.6 billion will be allocated to increase the unit support for childcare shuttle bus operations for centres serving vulnerable groups, and an extra KRW 300 million will be allocated to strengthen follow-up management support for vocational high school graduates who are yet to find employment, with plans to expand support to cover even the more detailed needs of education sites.
