Netflix original 'True Education' has gone to No 1 in 25 countries worldwide, emerging as the latest K-content hit, breaking into the US Top 10 and leading a new wave of international interest in Korean content.
Data from global OTT rankings site FlixPatrol showed that, as of the 7th, 'True Education' topped the Netflix TV chart in 25 countries spanning Asia and the Middle East, including Hong Kong, India and Saudi Arabia. In South Korea it has also held the number one spot consecutively from immediately after its release, underlining the strong interest in the show.
Most striking is its strong performance in North America and other English-speaking markets, where entry barriers are high. It achieved the milestone of entering the US Netflix top 10 and posted solid rankings across major English-speaking markets — No 5 in Canada and No 6 in Australia.
Planned as a 10-episode series, 'True Education' briskly depicts the Teacher Rights Protection Bureau's efforts to restore eroded school authority. 'Juvenile Justice' director Hong Jong-chan directs, and 'The Light in Your Eyes' writer Lee Nam-gyu penned the script; the series is being praised for combining a weighty social message with a high level of craft.
Performances from the cast have been central to the show's appeal. Kim Mu-yeol delivers cathartic force as Na Hwa-jin, a supervisor in the bureau, while Lee Sung-min brings weight to the drama as Education Minister Choi Kang-seok. Supporting players such as Jin Ki-joo and Pyo Ji-hoon maximise the series' dramatic punch.
The combination of a narrative that probes school violence and infringements on teacher authority with brisk action sequences has resonated across borders. 'True Education' is proving once again the strength of K-content and has entered a full-fledged long-run box-office race that global media are closely watching.
