South Korea is accelerating its efforts to attract outstanding foreign talent as it leaps forward as a global startup hub. Among the various visa systems offered by the government, the focus of aspiring entrepreneurs is undoubtedly on the Technology Startup Visa (D-8-4). This visa is issued to individuals who possess innovative technology and intellectual property rights, rather than being solely based on capital investment, and is considered a key gateway for those dreaming of becoming Korea's 'unicorns'.

The D-8-4 visa has distinct differences from the existing corporate investment visa (D-8). While the general corporate investment (D-8-1) requires a minimum capital of 100 million won, the technology startup visa can be obtained even with limited capital if the applicant has excellent patents and technological capabilities. This is interpreted as a significant reduction in entry barriers for early-stage startup founders with innovative ideas.

The key to obtaining a stable visa lies in the 'Comprehensive Support System for Startup Immigration (OASIS)' operated by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises and Startups. OASIS, which supports foreign technology startups, assigns points in stages for intellectual property registration, startup education, and company establishment. To obtain the D-8-4 visa, applicants must score at least 80 points out of a total of 340 points and meet at least one essential requirement.

Experts identify securing intellectual property rights as a crucial factor determining the success or failure of the visa application. Patent registration is not only a high-scoring item but also an objective indicator that proves technical expertise. In addition to the essential requirements of registering or applying for intellectual property rights (patents, utility models, design rights) and completing company establishment, factors such as Korean language proficiency and experience studying in Korea can also contribute to additional points.

After the visa is issued, proving tangible business results is essential. To extend the visa, applicants must demonstrate economic contributions such as generating revenue or creating jobs for the public. The government is currently implementing follow-up support measures such as startup incubation spaces, mentoring, and commercialization funding. Experts advise that "to pass the strict evaluation criteria, it is necessary to thoroughly complete the OASIS training program and utilize expert assistance as a strategy."
