The recent release of the 'World University Rankings' by the British university evaluation agency QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) has once again confirmed that Korean universities are in fierce global competition. In this evaluation, major domestic universities received mixed results in research performance and graduate reputation. Notably, the top-tier universities maintained or slightly improved their rankings, proving their global competitiveness, while many other universities showed a decline or stagnation in rankings, raising implications for the Korean higher education sector.
The most noteworthy point is the solid status of Seoul National University. Seoul National University maintained the highest position among domestic universities in this ranking, standing shoulder to shoulder with the world's top universities. This is analyzed as a result of consistently high scores in academic reputation and graduate employability indicators. Following closely are KAIST, Yonsei University, Korea University, and POSTECH, which fiercely compete within and around the top 100, preserving the pride of Korean higher education. These universities are believed to have positively influenced their rankings by strengthening international research networks (IRN) and expanding joint research with overseas scholars.
However, a close examination of the detailed indicators reveals that there are still numerous challenges to be addressed. In the internationalization sector, evaluation items such as 'foreign faculty ratio' and 'foreign student ratio' show that Korean universities still score lower compared to Western and Asian competitor universities. Additionally, there are calls for significant improvements in the qualitative impact of research, represented by the number of citations per faculty member. Experts agree that rather than short-term management of indicators for ranking improvement, there is an urgent need for bold institutional reforms to create a research ecosystem and attract excellent overseas talent from a long-term perspective.
The deepening polarization among universities is also a concerning aspect. While major universities in the metropolitan area successfully defended their rankings and showcased their competitiveness, the decline in rankings of regional universities, including local national universities, was evident. The prevailing analysis suggests that the decrease in the school-age population and the concentration of financial support in the metropolitan area are weakening the global competitiveness of regional universities. In this regard, an education sector official emphasized, "The competitiveness of universities is directly linked to national competitiveness", stating, "It is a critical time for balanced support policies at the government level for the qualitative improvement of higher education as a whole, rather than growth concentrated in specific top universities, along with innovative efforts from the universities themselves."
