Education Ministry Honors Contributors as Korean Enters Overseas Public School Curricula

South Korea's Ministry of Education has honored individuals and organizations that helped establish Korean-language instruction in overseas public education systems as global demand for Korean studies rises.

The ministry said it presented the 'Award for Contributions to Promoting Korean Language Education Abroad' to domestic and international stakeholders and related organizations that successfully established Korean-language curricula in overseas public education systems and developed diversified education models tailored to each country's circumstances, thereby enhancing the prestige of South Korea's higher education.

The commendation was created to recognize those who led the adoption of Korean as a regular subject in foreign schools and who devoted themselves to strengthening global Korean-language infrastructure amid the rapid global spread of Hallyu and rising demand for study in Korea.

Key awardees expanded the number of schools adopting Korean substantially through close partnerships with overseas education authorities and were highly praised for establishing local teacher training systems that created self-sustaining Korean-language education ecosystems. Educators and observers say these efforts have provided a sustainable foundation that anchors Korean beyond a temporary cultural fad into local public education systems.

A Ministry of Education official said, "As Korean's profile on the global stage surges, the number of countries adopting Korean as either a second foreign language or a regular subject is rising sharply each year," and emphasized, "Firming up local Korean-language education infrastructure overseas will be a powerful bridge for high-potential global talent to study at domestic universities or to take jobs at Korean companies in the future."

The government is also actively pursuing long-term talent-attraction policies by integrating overseas Korean-language education hubs with domestic higher-education infrastructure, in close coordination with the recently announced 'Plan to Expand the Recruitment of International Students (Study Korea 300K Project)' and the Regional Innovation-Centered University Support System (RISE).

Going forward, the ministry plans to deepen its coordinated network with overseas Korean education centers, foreign universities and education authorities, while also expanding textbook development, the dispatch of specialist teachers overseas, and support for online distance-learning platforms to foster both quantitative and qualitative growth in Korean-language education aimed at global prospective students.
